As a florist for more than twenty years, I've had many customers rely on me for advice as to what to
send their friends and loved ones as a bereavement gift. Depending on where the flowers will be sent,
the answer to this question can be quite different. Flowers that will be delivered to a funeral home can be
larger in scale, standing sprays, wreaths, hearts, casket covers. Large garden baskets can also be a nice
item to send to the funeral home. These days, as wakes have gotten shorter, may customers opt for something
that is more suited to a home arrangement, this way it can be taken to the family home after the funeral service.
Plants are also a good option. Personally I prefer something table top sized as to not overwhelm the grieving family
with where they are going to keep a very large floor plant. A vase of roses or mixed flowers makes a beautiful statement
and can be made in subtle tones or specific colors depending on the senders preferences. Many people like white and green
designs but there is nothing wrong with bright colors if you feeling that it is a celebration of life for a colorful person.
In the Christian faith, white is associated with the ascension of our Lord.
Gift baskets such as fruit and gourmet items are also appropriate for a home delivery.
In our florist, we have a special ceramic Angel planter that is paired with a peace lily plant. It makes a lovely gift to send
either to a funeral home service or the families home. Plants can be embellished with additional flowers, such as orchids.
Sympathy flowers, plants and baskets can be ordered in many different sizes and a large range of prices. The largest value of all is
showing support and caring to the grieving family.
I hope this is helpful,
Martha
