These days there aren't many flowers from the florist that have a scent. Happily, this time of year, there are some that carry beautiful garden scents. Lilac, which is available now for Mother's Day and no longer after that, has a magnificent fragrance. It always makes me stop in my tracks. Just the scent brings me back to being 5 years old and picking flowers to bring to Grandma. Mommy wrapped the stems in paper towel and tin foil to keep them hydrated. I held them in my hand throughout the long car ride in anticipation of giving them to my grandma. Science has proven that we have fragrance memory, scents can bring us back to memories that we have forgotten. Along with Lilac a few others come to mind for the Mother's Day Season. Sweetpea, a lightly fragrant delicate flower that is like no other. Garden Roses have been bred to keep them fragrant unlike most cut roses sold today. The breeding of roses has put all the emphasis on color and size and the fragrances has since disappeared. If you would like to bring some Nostalgia to your Mother's Day bouquet, be sure to ask your florist for some of the fragrant beauties they are offering.
