Back in the 1990's as I was starting to learn about floral design, dried flower decor was very popular. I've seen a revived interest in dried flower arrangements these days and I personally love that they last for years. They also bring a charm that is very old world with farm house vibes. Back then on a farm crops were done for the winter and
drying herbs and spices was a way of keeping their scents and taste available for the cold months. Today there are a wide variety of commercially dried flowers and many have been color treated, which holds their vibrancy for years. Dried flowers are best used in rooms that are not too humid and kept out of direct sunlight which will fade the colors. While they are not met to last forever, you could easily keep them for 1-3 years before they have collected too much dust or become so brittle that they shed when you move them. Arrange a bunch in an old vase and it will come back to life. My very favorite way to used them, was to make wreaths out of them. It's an relatively inexpensive way to fill up a focal wall in a newly decorated room. The kitchen can be great area to display hanging bunches of herbs or flowers aside from a wreath of dried peppers in bright colors, garlic, basil, oregano, cinnamon sticks, cloves the skies the limit!
Hydrangeas make great dried flowers and if your lucky you can find them still on the bush in the fall, completely dried. The cone shaped hydrangea go from white to green with a mauve hue in the fall, just let them stay in a plastic bag for a while to draw any insects that have found a home inside their petals.
